Congo Safaris

With a surface area of 2,345,408 square kilometers (905,567 sq mi), Congo is as bigger than the combined area of France, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Germany. It is the second largest country in Africa. It is largely undiscovered and has almost all precious minerals you can imagine; gold, silver, oil. It has the world’s largest reserves of coltan. However, what keeps most tourists coming back here is the endearing gorilla tracking experiences it offers. It has both lowland and mountain gorilla species. The latter thrives in Virunga National Park where its population constitutes over 60% of the world’s critically endangered Mountain Gorillas, 1004. This UNESCO World Heritage site is Africa’s oldest national park and covers 7800 Km2(3000square miles). It comprises of forests, Savannah, swamps and active volcanoes. Gorilla permits cost $400 for non-Congolese, $150 for Congolese Nationals and $250 for nationals of Southern African Development Community such as Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

After the tour of Virunga, you will always treasure the memory of that encountering the Okapi, an elegant herbivore that looks like a crossbreed of giraffes and zebras. It has a striking resemblance with both. Single entry to Congo costs $105 and covers for 14 days from the day of entry. Amazing Gorilla Expeditions can help you obtain this Visa thanks to its partnership with Congolese wildlife authority and Direction Générale de Migration (DGM), the Congolese immigration service. The nearest and most easily accessible airport to Virunga National Park is Kigali international airport. From here, our driver will pick you ahead of a four hours drive to the border crossing at Gisenyi, Rwanda/Goma town. You will cross at the “Grand Barrière” as opposed to “Petite Barrière”. Accessibility through the former entry point is much easier as it is primarily structured for tourism. However, if you arrive in the late afternoon or evening, you will spend the night in Kigali and resume the journey the next day. Why? The border opens at 8:00 and closes at 7:00 pm.
